I first played this game on the Amiga and it was an extremely faithful reproduction (by Ocean – the platform masters). Cute, lovable characters with lots of slightly confused references to both New Zealand and Australia.
It’s funny but I always thought the leopard seal was going to eat them, but it appears that there was something far more insidious than natural selection at work – capitalism! Yep, he planned to sell them on the black market.
Superb, pixel-perfect control and nicely drawn, if simple, backgrounds added to a crazy back-story about rescuing Tiki’s fellow kiwis from a fate worse than death at the hands of an evil leopard seal mastermind. Every four levels you met a boss, which had to be beaten with a different strategy. Extra weapons were left conveniently lying around and included boomerangs, bombs, laser guns and even a bible!
This game was ported to an amazing number of systems, I think Taito made more money from licensing fees than from the game itself!
The following systems received a port: FM Towns, Megadrive, Amstrad CPC, Spectrum, Master System, PC Engine, Commodore 64, Nintendo NES, Amiga, Atari ST and the Game Gear.
